10th International Conference of Maritime Law

The Piraeus Bar Association and the Organizing Committee are happy to welcome you at the website of the 1Oth International Conference of Maritime Law. After repeated postponements, due to the unforeseen circumstances of the last two years, it has been unanimously decided that the International Conference is definitely scheduled to take place from 26th to 28th May 2022, cautiously anticipating the progressive remission of the COVID-19 pandemic. As it is already announced, according to the initial programming, the Conference was about to be held on the same year with the celebration of the centenary of the Piraeus Bar Association’s foundation (2021). However, symbolism still remains, since conducting this year’s Conference marks the beginning of the new centenary for our Bar.

The Organizing Committee of the 10th International Conference has opted for the physical presence of foreign and Greek speakers, with the aim of ensuring better coordination, on one hand, and the institution’s prestige and character as a forum of interactive scientific dialogue and fruitful exchange of ideas among practitioners, on the other. The participants will be able to join the conference in a hybrid way (either remotely or in person, at the venue where the event will be held).

The subject “Protecting maritime operators in a changing regulatory and technological environment” as well as the programme follow the original design, with certain individual amendments. Regarding the original essays which have already been submitted, these will be evaluated and three Young Maritime Prizes will be awarded. We really hope that all speakers, sponsors and participants will eagerly continue to support our International Conference.

O Γιάννης Στουρνάρας είναι ο Διοικητής της Τράπεζας της Ελλάδος από το 2014. Αποφοίτησε από το Τμήμα Οικονομικών Επιστημών του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών (1978), απέκτησε Μεταπτυχιακό και Διδακτορικό τίτλο (MPhil 1980, DPhil 1982) από το Πανεπιστήμιο της Οξφόρδης, στο οποίο και εργάστηκε από το 1981 έως το 1985 ως Research Fellow και Lecturer στο Κολλέγιο St. Catherine΄s και ως ερευνητής στο Ινστιτούτο Ενεργειακών Σπουδών. Σήμερα είναι Καθηγητής Οικονομικών στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών.

Έχει εργαστεί ως ειδικός σύμβουλος του Υπουργείου Οικονομίας και Οικονομικών σε θέματα Δημοσίων Επιχειρήσεων και Εισοδηματικής Πολιτικής (1986-1989) και της Τράπεζας της Ελλάδος (1989-1994) σε θέματα Νομισματικής Πολιτικής. Ως Πρόεδρος του Συμβουλίου Οικονομικών Εμπειρογνωμόνων του Υπουργείου Οικονομίας και Οικονομικών, συμμετείχε στο σχεδιασμό της μακροοικονομικής και διαρθρωτικής πολιτικής εκπροσωπώντας το Υπουργείο στη Νομισματική Επιτροπή της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης (1994-2000).

Συμμετείχε επίσης στις διαπραγματεύσεις για τη συμμετοχή της Ελλάδας στην ΟΝΕ και είχε την ευθύνη για τις ετήσιες διαβουλεύσεις με το Διεθνές Νομισματικό Ταμείο, την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή και τον ΟΟΣΑ. Υπήρξε Αντιπρόεδρος της Δημόσιας Επιχείρησης Αερίου (1994-1997) και μέλος του Δ.Σ. του Οργανισμού Διαχείρισης Δημόσιου Χρέους (1994-2000). Ήταν Πρόεδρος και Διευθύνων Σύμβουλος της Εμπορικής Τράπεζας και Αντιπρόεδρος της Ένωσης Ελληνικών Τραπεζών (2000-2004), ενώ ήταν Διευθύνων Σύμβουλος στην ΚΑΠΠΑ Χρηματιστηριακή (2005-2008). Διετέλεσε Γενικός Διευθυντής στο ΙΟΒΕ (Σεπτέμβριος 2009 –Ιούνιος 2012) και Υπουργός Ανάπτυξης Ανταγωνιστικότητας και Ναυτιλίας, στην Υπηρεσιακή Κυβέρνηση (Μάιος-Ιούνιος 2012).
Από τον Ιούλιο του 2012 έως τον Ιούνιο του 2014 ήταν Υπουργός Οικονομικών.
